The Historic US Route 20 Associations vision and goal is to be a national association with branch organizations in each of the 12 States in which US Route 20 travels through. We hope to place historical signage in accordance with local or state laws promoting and preserving the highway.

The sign to the left is a generic sign used for promotional use only. For State Specific images, please scroll down.

We have chosen to use the 1926 shield in our design to promote any stretch of road that was signed as US 20 from 1926-1948.

In 1961, the Federal Highway Administration changed the design of the shield that is very similar to the one used today. At that time the state name and US were eliminated.

A goal of the Historic US Route 20 Association - To place Historic Route signs along Route 20.
The placement of "Historic Route" signs along original alignments and sections of US Route 20 are one of the goals of the Association. This image depicts the placement of a Historic Route sign along a 1926-1929 section of Route 20, currently known as the Wayside Inn Road in Sudbury, MA. The road was moved at the request of Henry Ford, the owner of the Wayside Inn, to decrease heavy traffic near the historic establishment.  The Historic Route 20 Association plans to work with town officials to designate and place these signs to promote travel and historical awareness of the country's longest highway from Massachusetts to Oregon.

The Historic US Route 20 Association is working with local communities to establish US Route 20 as a "Historic Route".  The designation can be granted through local ordinances or state law. The organization is responsible for the signage and will work with the local communities to help place the signs.  Where possible a QR code will be placed on each sign, to identify and keep track of the signs location as well as direct tourists and others to the organizations web site to give them further information about the location they are in.   It will be the locations responsibility for erecting the signage, unless otherwise negotiated. See our Historic Route 20 Signs page
