INTRODUCTION
Thank you for your interest in the Historic Route 20 signs.
We are proud that the Iowa Department of Transportation granted our request to designate the original 1926 alignments of US Highway 20 as a State Historic Auto Trail.

The Historic Auto Trail is 333 miles long between Dubuque and Sioux City.  Specific requirements for signage is needed to ensure the Historic Route is complete across the state.

REQUIREMENTS
The Department of Transportation has indicated that the entire Historic Auto Trail have complete wayfinding signage to guide travelers along the designated Auto Trail.

If a sign is to be placed on the State Highway it must:

• Be size LARGE 24" X 30"
• Be permitted by the regional DOT - See Contact Info
• Have all turns are indicated by arrows
• Be paid for by the interested party*
  • ​This may include poles and labor
• Only the designated Trail on a State Highway can have way-finding signage. ( i.e.  No signage on other state highways to direct travelers to the Historic Route)

Signage on City and County Highways:

• Placed at the discretion of the city/county hwy engineer
• Does not need to be permitted by the DOT
• Can be Small or Large size
  • Small signs should only be used for reassurance and not for turns or directional
• Signage to the Historic Route can be used.
• Alternate Routes may be signed

DESIGNATED ROUTE
Historic Route 20 is an officially designated Historic Auto Trail within the State of Iowa.
The Trail is designed for Automobile, Bicycle, Motorcycle and Pedestrian traffic
The official trail is on all paved surfaces.  
Other alternate alignments have been identified and are noted on our maps

• May be gravel, dead-ended or abandoned.
• Specific and separate signage may be used to indicate these routes by the local city or county

ALTERNATE ALIGNMENTS
The organization allows for and encourages other original alignments to be identified with signage when:

• The alignment is NOT on an Iowa DOT HIghway
• The alignment is gravel
• The alignment is abandoned
• The alignment is a stub or dead ends

For gravel roadways -  the organization, concurs with local tourism that signing gravel roadways, while accurate may not be conducive to motorcycle or other means of travel.  We are working to design these routes when appropriate.

​* While the Iowa Department of Transportation approved the Historic Route 20 Auto Trail, all costs associated to the placement of signage is the responsibility of the interested party. The interested party was agreed upon in the original resolutions signed by the cities and county.  This may refer to organization, the city or county, local tourism/economic development group, etc.  Therefore, all costs for signage, sign placement, poles and maintenance are the responsibility of the interested party.
